Native to intermountain states; adapted to western United States, east to the Dakotas; grows to 4’; best suited to loams and sandy loams, receiving less than 14" of rainfall annually; moderately tolerant of alkaline soils (pH 8.8); well adapted to moist river bottom soils, and light textured alpine soils to 12,000’ elevation; reddish to purplish hue on stems; excellent soil erosion grass; very short lived perennial grass; first North American native grass to be cultivated; rarely found in pure stands.
